Dan Thompson is the creator of the comic strips Rip Haywire and Lost Sheep. In Rip Haywire, the title character is a soldier of fortune, a contemporary adventure hero in the classic mold: a brave, square-jawed man of honor who lives for danger. He's also a bit of a lug. Rip Haywire is an action-packed, silly send-up of the adventure comic strip that takes readers on a roller-coaster ride across the globe. “Rip Haywire is funny, expertly drawn and appeals to kids and adults,” said Thompson. “There’s adventure, suspense and cliffhanger storylines that leave the reader gasping and bring them back first thing in the morning to see what happened next. The adventure is the most popular story device since man started telling stories!” Lost Sheep is the story of George, a quietly plucky sheep who set out on his own to explore the world. He quickly made a fast friend in roommate Joe, a quiet and genial beret-wearing gent and Frank, an unhappy obnoxious parrot from a pet shop.
Thompson began his professional career doing character design and animation for FunnyBone Interactive, part of Vivendi Universal, then moved into freelance cartoon illustration and gag cartooning. A member of the National Cartoonists Society, he writes and draws cartoons for magazines, greeting cards, comic books and Web sites. Thompson also draws for the Brevity comic panel. A New England native, Thompson was born and raised in Lowell, Mass. He now lives in Graham, N.C., with his wife and two sons.
Meet the Cast of Rip Haywire
Rip Haywire A contemporary adventure hero in the classic mold. Rip is a brave, handsome man of honor who lives only for dangerous thrills. Rip earns his living as a soldier of fortune, treasure hunter and occasional rescuer of mistreated pets. Accepting any job that reeks of danger, Rip operates in an underground fraternity of mercenaries, spies and the usual megalomaniacal madmen bent on absolute power. Rip handles it all...whether it requires fists, charm or the sporadic doomsday device, you can count on Rip to do the job with a minimum of planning.
Cobra Carson In her late 20s, Cobra is a self-reliant master thief, total hottie, and case study in amorality. True to her name she can be dangerous, cold-blooded and venomous. She’d sell out her own mother – but only for the right price. She uses her feminine wiles to constant advantage, but her heart belongs to Rip. It’s her best quality — and greatest weakness.
TNT The sidekickiest of all sidekicks! A coward’s coward! TNT is the classic dog hero à la Rin Tin Tin, Old Yeller and Lassie...minus the pluck. He is quick-witted and fast to retreat, but reluctantly helps out on adventures whenever certain doom looms. (Mostly, though, he’s in the game for the kibble.)
