Universal Uclick Cartoonist Wiley Miller Wins Reuben Award for Cartoonist of the Year
Kansas City, Mo. (May 28, 2014) -- Wiley Miller was named the winner of the Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year during the 68th Annual Reuben Awards dinner in San Diego, California, on May 24.
The Reuben Award, named after longtime honorary NCS president Rube Goldberg, is considered the top prize in professional cartooning. Previous winners include industry icons such as Charles Schulz, Garry Trudeau, Bill Watterson, Gary Larson, Bill Mauldin and Will Eisner.
"Wiley was a great and worthy choice for the Reuben,” Universal Uclick President John Glynn said. “He's the whole package: amazing writing, incredible art, years of experience. And apropos of nothing, he's also very tall."
Miller’s comic strip Non Sequitur, syndicated by Universal Uclick, provides a wry look at the absurdities in everyday life. Creative and clever, it tackles current cultural issues, including politics, celebrities and relationships.
Miller has been recognized multiple times for his work on Non Sequitur, receiving the National Cartoonist Society Newspaper Comic Strip Award in 1992, as well as the Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award in 1995, 1996 and 1998.
In addition to Miller, two Universal Uclick-syndicated cartoonists were recognized during the ceremony. Mark Parisi, of Off the Mark, won the division award for “Greeting Cards.” Universal Uclick-syndicated cartoonist Dave Whamond, of Reality Check, won the division award for “Magazine Illustration.”
Four creators who contribute to Universal Uclick’s GoComics website and mobile app also received awards. Michael Ramirez won the division award for “Editorial Cartoons.” Rich Powell of Wide Open won the division award for “Advertising/Product Illustration.” Buni creator Ryan Pagelow received the division award for “Online-Short Form.” Dave Coverly of Speed Bump won the division award for “Newspaper Panel.”
