Jim Toomey receives The Eleanor Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions toward ocean conservation

Famous conservation cartoonist Jim Toomey coming to Loggerhead

Jim Toomey, the creator of the daily comic strip, “Sherman’s Lagoon,” says he has two lifelong passions: Art and the sea. In addition to Sherman’s Lagoon, which is syndicated to more than 150 newspapers in 20 countries and six languages, his cartoon books have sold more than a half-million copies worldwide.

On Thursday, Jan. 25 at Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC), fans of his work can meet him. Toomey will be part of the center’s “By the Sea” lecture series. He’ll be discussing the inspiration behind “Sherman’s Lagoon” and his journey of conservation efforts. He has recently repurposed his cartooning skills into animation and has completed a series of short films in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme on the topic of ocean conservation.

The event will take place at the center’s Sky Deck, where cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be available. LMC’s President and CEO Andy Dehart will also take part in the discussion, which is scheduled at 5-7:00 p.m.

Tickets are $40 per person and can be purchased online. All attendees must be age 21 and older. Seniors who are 70 and older will receive a special $2 discount. For more information, visit marinelife.org/program/by-the-sea-lecture series.

Toomey is also the keynote speaker for LMC’s 15th annual “Go Blue Awards” celebration on Friday, Jan. 26. He will be recognized as the recipient of The Eleanor Fletcher Lifetime Achievement Award. The ceremony acknowledges individuals, youth, business, and nonprofit organization making significant contribution in ocean conservation. The evening is presented by Tampa General Hospital.

Toomey has previously been honored with the prestigious Environmental Hero Award on two occasions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
