Universal Uclick Celebrates 45 Years of “Ziggy”
Kansas City, MO (June 28, 2016) – Universal Uclick is celebrating the 45th anniversary of the famed comic strip Ziggy.
In 1971 Tom Wilson Sr. created Ziggy, America’s lovable loser, to encourage everyone to take themselves less seriously. The strip shows how even positivity and the best intentions can be stymied by an indifferent world—and that a little self-deprecation goes a long way to ease failures. Ziggy might not always win, but he never stops trying.
The strip gained widespread popularity—appearing in newspapers all over the world, on greeting cards, calendars and books—even winning an Emmy Award for the animated special Ziggy’s Gift in 1982. Five years later, Tom Wilson Sr. entrusted the job of drawing Ziggy to his son. Over the last three decades, Tom Wilson Jr. has kept the original spirit of the comic strip alive while achieving even greater success. Although Tom Wilson Sr. passed away in 2011 at the age of 80, his heart and soul will always be a part of the sympathetic little character.
About the Creators
Tom Wilson Jr. attended Miami (Ohio) University where he studied graphic design, and later graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He is president of Ziggy and Friends, Inc. Wilson now lives and works in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Ziggy's founder and creator, Tom Wilson Sr., passed away in 2011, but he lives on in the loveable comics he created. During his career, Mr. Wilson served as a creative head at American Greetings for more than 35 years, leading the team that developed such licensing blockbusters as Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears, and was also renowned as a talented painter. But perhaps most memorable of all, Mr. Wilson gave us Ziggy.
